About this course

Bioarchaeology sits at the fascinating junction of biological science and archaeology, using the physical remains of past populations to reconstruct how people lived, died, and interacted with their environments across long periods of human history. It draws on osteology, genetics, isotope analysis, and ecological science to study skeletal and organic remains, asking questions about diet, disease, migration, population structure, and the relationship between human communities and their landscapes. At the University of York, this three-year, full-time programme benefits from the BioArCh centre, a collaborative research facility formed by the Departments of Archaeology, Biology, and Chemistry, and internationally recognised for its concentration of expertise in human palaeoecology and environmental archaeology. You will develop skills in both the biological sciences and archaeological methods, learning to analyse skeletal material, interpret ancient DNA, apply stable isotope data, and situate your findings within broader historical and environmental frameworks. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities, giving you professional and international experience alongside your academic study.
