About this course

Accounting is the financial language of organisations. Through the systematic recording, reporting, and analysis of financial information, accounting enables organisations to understand their performance, meet their obligations to shareholders, creditors, tax authorities, and regulators, and make better decisions about the future. It is also the gateway to a wide range of professional careers, with the major accounting qualifications serving as recognised marks of professional competence across the world. At the University of the West of Scotland you will study financial and management accounting, corporate finance, auditing, taxation, and financial reporting standards alongside the analytical and professional skills that employers in the accounting profession value. The four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, both of which are particularly valuable for accounting students: the placement gives you real experience in an accounting firm, corporate finance department, or public sector finance role, and the year abroad gives you an international perspective on financial reporting and accounting practice in a world where multinational organisations and cross-border transactions are everyday realities. Graduates are well placed for careers in accountancy, auditing, corporate finance, tax, management accounting, and financial management across public and private sector organisations. The degree provides strong preparation for the professional examinations of the major accounting bodies, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants, ACCA, and CIMA, whose qualifications many graduates pursue alongside or after their degree. Many others move directly into graduate roles in financial services, industry, or the public sector. Postgraduate study in accounting, finance, or an MBA is also an option for those who want to develop further.
