HND Acting and Performance
About this course
Acting and performance is the discipline concerned with the art of embodying characters, communicating stories, and creating live experience for an audience. It demands the full integration of physical, vocal, emotional, and intellectual capacities, and the training it requires is both intensive and cumulative, building technique, imaginative range, and professional stamina over time. Performance sits at the heart of theatrical culture and extends into film, television, radio, and the many hybrid and site-specific forms that characterise contemporary practice. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this two-year full-time programme develops your acting and performance skills through intensive practical training. The programme covers the fundamental techniques of acting, including voice, movement, character development, textual analysis, and scene work, alongside the professional awareness needed to work in contemporary performance contexts. The UHI network of campuses across the Highlands and Islands offers a distinctive study environment, and the performing arts traditions and communities of the region provide an authentic cultural context for your development as a performer. The programme is designed to develop your craft through close studio work and performance experience, building the confidence, flexibility, and technical grounding that professional acting careers require. Graduates go on to work as actors and performers in theatre, film, television, and other performance contexts, or to pursue further training through postgraduate programmes in acting or related performing arts disciplines. Many use the programme as preparation for entry into drama school or as a foundation for a career in the wider performing arts sector, including arts education, community theatre, physical performance, and applied theatre contexts. The skills developed through acting and performance training are also valued beyond the performing arts, in education, communications, and any field that requires confident public presence and communication.
