BA Acting and Sociology (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Acting and sociology is an unusual but intellectually rewarding combination that develops your creative practice as a performer alongside your analytical understanding of society. Acting trains you in the techniques of performance, including voice, movement, characterisation, and the interpretation of text, for both stage and screen contexts. Sociology asks how societies are organised, how social structures produce inequality and difference, and how institutions, culture, and power shape human experience. Together, they give you both a practical creative skill and a rigorous intellectual framework for understanding the world. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme equips you with the skills, knowledge, and creativity to thrive on stage and screen, while also developing your sociological understanding of how social forces shape the lives of the people you will portray. You will study acting technique, movement, voice, and performance practice alongside sociological theory, social research methods, and the analysis of inequality, identity, and culture. The programme includes a sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement, giving you professional performance experience and international exposure. Entry typically requires around 88 UCAS tariff points. Graduates work as actors in theatre, film, and television, in community and applied theatre, in teaching and drama education, in arts administration, and in a wide range of roles in the creative industries and beyond where both creative and analytical skills are valued. The sociology component is particularly relevant to graduates who go on to work in community arts, arts and health, or social research roles.
