MSci Adult and Mental Health Nursing
About this course
Adult and mental health nursing together address two of the most important domains in healthcare, and studying them in combination produces a practitioner with a uniquely comprehensive understanding of human wellbeing. Adult nursing covers the care of people with acute and chronic physical conditions across the lifespan from young adulthood to old age, while mental health nursing focuses on the psychological, emotional, and social dimensions of care, working with people experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis, personality disorders, and the complex interactions between mental and physical health. This four-year full-time MSci programme at Roehampton University is designed for those who are passionate about supporting both the physical and mental wellbeing of others. The MSci level of the award reflects the academic depth of the programme and equips you with the skills, knowledge, and professional confidence to work across both fields. You will develop clinical competencies in both adult and mental health nursing through integrated theoretical study and substantial practice placements across a range of settings, including hospital wards, community mental health teams, primary care, and specialist services. The four-year duration allows you to develop genuine expertise in both domains. Qualifying with a dual registration in adult and mental health nursing gives you an unusually broad professional scope. The NHS and independent sector both have significant need for practitioners who can work across the physical-mental health boundary, which is increasingly understood as artificial given how often the two interact. Graduates go on to roles in acute medicine, rehabilitation, psychiatric wards, crisis intervention, community mental health, and integrated care services. Many go on to develop specialisms in areas such as liaison psychiatry, eating disorders, or psychological therapies with further training. Advanced practice, clinical leadership, research, and nurse education are all available career progressions.
