BSc Adult Nursing
About this course
Adult Nursing is a profession built on a commitment to care, combining clinical knowledge and skill with the interpersonal qualities needed to support people through some of the most challenging experiences of their lives. Registered adult nurses assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care for patients across a wide age range and clinical setting, working both as autonomous practitioners and as members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The role demands not only technical competence but also the judgment to respond quickly to changing situations, the ability to communicate clearly with patients and colleagues, and a sustained commitment to compassionate and person-centred practice. At the University of Cumbria this three-year full-time BSc leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which you will achieve on graduation by meeting the NMC's requirements for entry to the register. The programme gives you the right balance of theory and practice, combining academic study in areas such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and evidence-based care with substantial supervised clinical placements in a range of healthcare environments. You will develop your clinical skills through simulation-based learning as well as through real practice, building the confidence and competence you need to begin your career as a qualified nurse. Registration as an adult nurse opens a wide range of career possibilities within the NHS and independent healthcare sector. Many graduates begin in ward-based or community nursing roles before specialising in areas such as critical care, emergency nursing, theatres, cancer care, mental health liaison, older peoples' care or a clinical specialty aligned to their interests and experience. Opportunities for career development are strong, with routes into clinical leadership, specialist and advanced practice, nursing education and research all available to nurses who wish to develop beyond their initial registration.
