About this course

Aeronautical engineering addresses the design, development, and maintenance of aircraft, spacecraft, and associated systems, applying the principles of fluid mechanics, structures, propulsion, and control to some of the most demanding engineering challenges in existence. Aircraft must be both extremely light and extraordinarily strong, must function reliably across enormous ranges of speed and altitude, and must do so with the highest possible standards of safety. Aeronautical engineers are at the forefront of some of the most exciting engineering developments of the century, from electric aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels to hypersonic vehicles and autonomous systems. At Wrexham University, this six-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need to build their scientific and mathematical foundations before entering the main engineering curriculum. The foundation year is an integral first stage, not a detour, and it prepares you fully for the rigorous aeronautical content that follows. You will develop understanding in applied aerodynamics, flight mechanics, structural analysis, propulsion systems, and the design and certification processes that govern aircraft development. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you direct professional experience in the aerospace or engineering sector before you complete your studies. The master's level programme equips you for engineering practice at a high technical level. Graduates from aeronautical engineering programmes work with aircraft manufacturers, airlines, the Ministry of Defence, aerospace suppliers, and engineering consultancies in roles including aerodynamicist, structures engineer, flight systems engineer, airworthiness specialist, and design engineer. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Royal Aeronautical Society. Further study at doctoral level in specific technical areas such as aerodynamics, structures, or propulsion is open to those who wish to pursue research or highly specialist roles.
