MEng Aerospace Electronic Engineering with Industrial Studies
About this course
Aerospace electronic engineering is the discipline that designs and develops the electronic systems on which modern aircraft, spacecraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles depend. From navigation and flight control to communications, sensor systems, and the computing infrastructure that enables autonomous operation, electronic engineering is fundamental to every aspect of how aerospace vehicles work. The combination of aerospace knowledge and electronic engineering expertise produces graduates who can contribute to one of the most technologically demanding and innovation-driven sectors in the world. At Southampton this five-year full-time programme, designated as the Industrial Studies route, includes a sustained period of professional experience embedded in its structure. You will develop the skills to work on future interplanetary missions, create new electronic systems for unmanned air vehicles, and engage with the emerging technologies shaping aerospace engineering. The programme combines rigorous academic training in electronic and electrical engineering principles with aerospace-specific applications, taking you from the foundations of circuit design, signals, and control systems through to advanced topics in avionics, embedded systems, and aerospace electronics. Group and individual projects provide valuable technical and professional experience throughout. The five-year structure with industrial studies gives you both the depth of a thorough engineering education and the direct professional exposure that employers in aerospace and defence most value in graduates. Graduates move into careers in the aerospace and defence industries, in avionics systems engineering, satellite technology, unmanned systems, flight control, and electronics research and development. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Postgraduate study is a route for those drawn to research or advanced specialisation.
