About this course
Aerospace engineering is one of the most demanding and most rewarding branches of engineering, concerned with the design, development, and operation of aircraft, spacecraft, and related systems. It applies principles from aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, avionics, and materials science to create vehicles that must perform reliably in extreme conditions, often with very little margin for error. The field is also at the frontier of responses to some of the most urgent engineering challenges of our time, including minimising aircraft noise and emissions, developing alternative propulsion systems, and designing unmanned aerial vehicles for applications from surveillance to delivery. At Queen's University Belfast this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the scientific and engineering principles that underpin aerospace engineering, alongside their application to the design and analysis of real aerospace systems. You will study aerodynamics, structural mechanics, propulsion, flight dynamics, materials, and systems engineering, developing both the analytical rigour and the practical problem-solving skills that the industry demands. The programme engages with the future challenges facing aerospace engineering, including environmental sustainability and the shift towards zero-carbon propulsion, preparing you to contribute to an industry that is undergoing significant technological change. The versatility that aerospace engineering training develops, combining rigorous mathematical analysis with creative design thinking and systems-level reasoning, is recognised across a range of industries beyond aerospace itself, including defence, automotive, energy, and advanced manufacturing. Graduates move into roles in aircraft design and manufacture, aerospace systems engineering, propulsion development, avionics, project management, and the defence sector. Many pursue chartered engineer status through bodies such as the Royal Aeronautical Society. Postgraduate study at Masters or doctoral level is a common route for those drawn to research or advanced engineering specialisation.
