Aerospace engineering is the discipline responsible for the design, development, and operation of aircraft and spacecraft, two categories of vehicle that demand extraordinary precision and that operate in some of the most unforgiving environments in engineering. The field covers aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, avionics, and systems integration, and it requires engineers who can work with high-performance materials, understand complex fluid flows, and design systems where failure is not an option. At Swansea you will develop expert training in the theory and practice of aerospace engineering, engaging with the aeronautics of jet-powered aircraft and propeller-driven planes, as well as with gliders, helicopters, and the growing domain of unmanned systems. The programme covers aerodynamics, structural analysis, propulsion systems, flight mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, and the computational methods that are central to modern aerospace design. You will develop both analytical skills and practical competence, working on problems that reflect the real challenges the industry faces. The three-year full-time programme equips you with the depth of understanding that a demanding and safety-critical engineering sector requires. Aerospace engineering graduates are sought across the aerospace and defence industries, in aircraft and component manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul, space agencies, and research institutions. The professional engineering route, through incorporated and then chartered engineer status, is a well-defined pathway for graduates who want to advance in the profession. Skills in aerodynamics, structures, and systems also transfer to the automotive, marine, and energy sectors, where the engineering challenges have structural similarities.
