BA Ancient History
About this course
Ancient history is the study of human civilisation from the earliest written records to the late antique period, with a particular focus on the societies of Greece and Rome that have shaped Western culture so profoundly. It is a discipline that combines rigorous textual analysis of ancient sources with archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, and the study of material culture, asking not only what happened in the ancient world but how we know, and what the process of historical interpretation reveals about the distance between past and present. At the University of Leeds this three-year, full-time programme takes you across the civilisations of ancient Greece, Rome, Persia, and beyond, analysing their political, cultural, and social histories. You will study how ancient societies have been received and interpreted by later cultures, from the Renaissance to the present day, and how the discipline of ancient history itself has evolved over time. The programme develops your ability to read ancient sources critically, to work with physical evidence, and to construct sustained historical arguments in clear, precise prose. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities are all built into the course, giving you professional experience and an international dimension that broaden both your personal formation and your career prospects. Graduates of ancient history move into careers across an impressive range. Many work in museums, heritage organisations, archives, education, publishing, and the cultural sector, where deep historical knowledge is directly relevant. Others move into journalism, the civil service, law, consulting, or financial services, where the research, analytical, and communication skills the discipline develops are genuinely valued. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in ancient history, classical archaeology, or related fields, building towards academic careers or specialist professional roles in heritage and the arts. The placement and year abroad options add a practical and international dimension that strengthens graduate employability across all these paths.
