About this course

Animation is the art and craft of creating the illusion of movement and life from static images, and the discipline that has expanded from hand-drawn cartoons into one of the most technically and creatively demanding fields in the digital creative industries. Computer animation and visual effects now underpin feature films, television series, video games, virtual reality experiences, educational content, advertising, and countless other digital products, and the skills involved range from character design and rigging through to simulation, rendering, compositing, and the technical pipeline management that enables large-scale productions. As the demand for high-quality visual content continues to grow across platforms, the need for skilled animators and visual effects artists has never been greater. At the University of Bedfordshire, this three-year full-time degree develops the creative, design, and technical skills needed to produce computer-generated animation and visual effects for entertainment, education, and promotional purposes. You will work with industry-standard tools and software, developing practical competence in character animation, 3D modelling, texturing, lighting, rendering, and compositing, as well as exploring emerging applications such as virtual reality and mixed reality. The degree connects technical skill with creative and conceptual development, ensuring that you graduate not only with the ability to execute techniques but with the artistic judgement needed to produce work of genuine quality. Hands-on project work builds your portfolio of creative output from the start of the programme. Graduates enter careers in animation studios, visual effects companies, video game development, film and television production, advertising and marketing, educational technology, and the growing immersive media sector. Roles include character animator, 3D artist, VFX artist, technical animator, motion graphics designer, and game artist. The creative and technical skills the degree develops are also valued in product visualisation, architectural visualisation, and corporate communications. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in animation, visual effects, games design, or digital media, building specialist expertise for senior creative or technical roles in the industry.
