Applied mathematics and physics is a combination that offers enhanced flexibility, increased choice, and the opportunity to pursue some of the most interesting and relevant questions pervasive in society, technology, and the universe. Mathematics and physics are deeply intertwined: the laws of physics are expressed in mathematical language, and some of the most important developments in mathematics have been driven by the demands of physical theory. Studying them together develops both the physical intuition that comes from engaging with the real behaviour of matter, energy, and space and the mathematical rigour that allows those intuitions to be expressed precisely, tested, and built upon. At Queen's University of Belfast, this three-year full-time programme gives you the best aspects of the separate mathematics and physics degrees in a single combined programme, with greater choice and flexibility than either alone. Mathematics graduates have the fifth highest employment rate of any degree subject in the UK and physics the twelfth, and this degree provides a unique combination of factors: pure science with infinite intrigue awaiting a curious mind, and a hugely valuable and employable skill set enabling a broad range of possible future careers. You will study mathematical analysis, algebra, mechanics, quantum physics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, and computational methods, developing both the theory and its applications. With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at a well-regarded research university. Graduates pursue careers across an exceptionally wide range of fields including engineering, data science, software development, financial modelling, quantitative research, meteorology and climate science, medical physics, optics and photonics, signal processing, academic research, and the technology sector. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in physics, mathematics, applied mathematics, data science, or a related discipline, building on the strong quantitative foundation the degree provides.
