Archaeology and German is a combination that may seem unusual at first, but it makes compelling sense for students who want to engage seriously with both the physical traces of the human past and the linguistic and cultural world of one of Europe's most significant nations. Archaeology is the systematic study of how people in the past interacted with their world through material evidence, examining objects, sites, monuments, and landscapes to reconstruct past societies and understand how they changed over time. German brings access to a rich literary, philosophical, and cultural tradition, and genuine language fluency that is increasingly valuable in an interconnected Europe. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme provides sufficient time to develop real depth in both disciplines. You will study archaeological theory and method alongside German language, literature, and cultural history, and you will develop the analytical, linguistic, and practical skills that each field requires. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, providing professional experience that complements the academic study and gives you a real-world context for both disciplines.
