BA Archaeology (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Archaeology is the study of the human past through its material remains: the objects, structures, deposits, and landscapes that people have left behind, from the earliest stone tools to the ruins of the recent past. It is a discipline that demands both meticulous fieldwork and rigorous scholarly analysis, combining hands-on investigation of physical evidence with the interpretation of what that evidence can tell us about past societies, behaviours, and environments. Archaeology makes accessible periods and peoples for which no written records exist, and it continues to transform our understanding even of the well-documented past. At the University of Winchester, this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year that provides the academic preparation needed before progressing to degree-level archaeological study. You will learn core fieldwork techniques including survey, excavation, recording, and post-excavation analysis, using excellent field equipment that includes ground-penetrating radar, magnetometers, differential GPS instruments, total stations, and an X-ray fluorescence analyser. These tools allow you to conduct genuine scientific investigation of archaeological sites and materials, developing practical skills alongside the theoretical and interpretive frameworks that underpin the discipline. The programme is delivered by experienced archaeologists in a supportive learning environment. A typical entry tariff of 56 points reflects a genuinely inclusive admissions approach that welcomes students from a wide range of prior backgrounds who are motivated to develop as archaeologists. Graduates from archaeology programmes go on to careers in commercial archaeology and heritage consultancy, museum and archive work, cultural resource management, local and national government heritage roles, historic environment organisations, and education. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in archaeology, heritage management, or related fields, developing specialist expertise for professional or academic careers.
