About this course

Architectural technology is the discipline that sits between the creative vision of architecture and the technical rigour of construction, translating design intent into buildable, safe, and sustainable reality. Where architects conceive buildings, architectural technologists specify how they will be built: what materials to use, how structures will perform, how elements will be detailed, how buildings will meet building regulations, and how construction will be managed through design and contract documentation. It is a profession that demands both creative engagement with the built environment and exacting technical precision. At Middlesex University, this three-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you extended professional experience alongside your academic study. The placement is central to the degree: architectural technology is a discipline where professional practice and academic learning are most valuable when they occur in dialogue, and the opportunity to work in a practice or consultancy before your final year equips you with context and experience that transforms how you approach your studies. You will develop skills in architectural drawing and digital modelling, building information modelling, construction technology and materials science, environmental design, building regulations and sustainability standards, and the professional and contractual frameworks within which architectural technologists work. The programme's London location places you within one of the world's most architecturally active cities throughout your studies. Architectural technology develops both technical precision and spatial thinking, along with the communication skills needed to work effectively within multi-professional design and construction teams. Graduates work in architectural practices, construction companies, building consultancies, property development, and local authority planning and building control. Many pursue chartered status with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. Postgraduate study in architectural technology, building services, or sustainability is also a route taken by some graduates.
