About this course
Architecture is at once a creative act and a powerful social force, shaping the places people live in, work in and move through, and making visible the values, ambitions and constraints of the societies that produce it. To study architecture seriously is to engage simultaneously with aesthetic questions about form, space and light, technical questions about structure, materials and sustainability, and social questions about how the built environment serves, excludes or transforms communities. It is one of the broadest and most demanding of the design disciplines, requiring you to think at the scale of the building, the city and the landscape while also attending to the detail of a joint or a material surface. At Leeds Beckett University this programme is offered part-time, and it includes a year abroad, making it particularly suitable for those who wish to combine professional development with international experience while managing other commitments alongside their studies. The part-time structure suits people working in architecture, construction or related fields who are pursuing or consolidating their academic credentials. You will engage critically and creatively with design projects, exploring architecture as both a technical and a cultural practice. Leeds Beckett encourages students to think boldly, to respond to real-world challenges, and to develop ideas that reimagine places, identities and communities. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 120 UCAS points. The BA (Hons) Architecture is typically the first stage in a longer professional qualification in the UK, where full registration as an architect requires completion of graduate and professional stages alongside a period of practice. However, the degree also leads directly into careers in urban design, planning, interior architecture, design management, heritage conservation and property development for those who do not follow the full architectural registration route. Postgraduate study in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or sustainability is a natural progression for those who wish to continue.
