About this course

Architecture is the discipline that shapes the physical environments in which people live, work, learn, and gather. It is both a technical and a cultural practice, requiring command of structural and environmental engineering principles alongside historical knowledge, design thinking, and the ability to understand what buildings mean to the people who inhabit them. A degree in architecture is one of the most demanding and most rewarding in higher education, and the process of becoming a qualified architect involves years of education and professional training. At Sheffield, this RIBA-recognised BA programme provides a broad foundation spanning the sciences and humanities, preparing you not just to design buildings but to understand the full range of factors that bear on architectural decisions. You will work in the studio, developing and refining design proposals through iterative processes of drawing, model-making, and critique. Alongside studio work, you will study the history and theory of architecture, the technical aspects of structure and environmental design, and the social and ethical dimensions of practice. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you professional experience in architectural offices, and a year abroad allows you to encounter different architectural traditions and built environments first hand. The BA is the first step on the path to professional qualification as an architect, which in the UK requires subsequent Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications. Many graduates continue to Part 2 study at Sheffield or other institutions. Others work in the broader built environment sector, including urban design, landscape architecture, heritage conservation, and property development. The analytical and design skills the programme develops are also valued in creative industries more widely.
