BA Architecture
About this course
Architecture is the discipline concerned with the design of buildings and the spaces between them, asking how the built environment can be shaped to be not only functional and safe but genuinely meaningful, beautiful, and responsive to the needs of the people who inhabit it. Architects work at the intersection of art and engineering, of social aspiration and physical reality, developing proposals that address technical constraints, cultural contexts, environmental responsibilities, and aesthetic ambitions simultaneously. It is one of the most demanding and most rewarding creative and professional disciplines available. At the University of Portsmouth, this three-year full-time programme is grounded in the belief that design can shape a more inclusive, sustainable, and culturally vibrant world. You will explore how creative thinking and new technologies can help respond to the social and environmental challenges shaping the places we live, developing the design skills, technical knowledge, and critical thinking that architectural education demands. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in an architectural practice and international exposure that broadens your understanding of how architecture works in different cultural and climatic contexts. Architecture graduates from a first degree programme typically go on to complete the later stages of professional qualification, working in architectural practices while studying and gaining the experience required for full registration. Career paths span residential and commercial architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, heritage conservation, environmental design, and the growing field of sustainable and low-carbon construction. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in architecture, urban design, or related fields, developing specialist expertise for more senior design roles or research careers.
