Architecture is one of the most demanding and most rewarding creative disciplines, requiring the ability to think simultaneously about aesthetics, structure, environment, materials, history, and the complex human needs that buildings exist to serve. It is a profession with a long path to qualification, and the arts foundation year at Lincoln provides an interdisciplinary starting point for students who want to build their creative and technical foundations before committing to a specific degree path, or who want a broader introduction to the creative arts before specialising in architecture. At Lincoln, the arts foundation year is shared across a range of creative programmes, including animation, fine art, graphic design, photography, and interior architecture, giving you the opportunity to explore different creative disciplines and develop the fundamental skills, artistic thinking, and visual awareness that architecture and the other arts share. The architecture degree itself develops spatial design skills, structural understanding, environmental knowledge, and the historical and theoretical literacy that architectural education requires, progressing through increasingly complex design projects and professional practice learning. A sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and a work placement are all available, providing professional experience in architectural offices or related settings and broadening your perspective on how architecture is practised in different contexts. Architecture graduates use the degree as the first step on a professional path that, in the UK, requires Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications before full registration as an architect. Many graduates continue to Part 2 study either at Lincoln or elsewhere. Others find careers in the broader built environment sector, including urban design, heritage conservation, landscape architecture, and property development. The creative and analytical skills developed through architectural education are also valued in design, media, and the creative industries.
