BA Architecture with Foundation Year
About this course
Architecture is the design of the built environment: the spaces and structures within which human life is lived. It is a discipline that combines technical and scientific knowledge with artistic creativity and ethical responsibility, asking not just how buildings stand up and function, but what they communicate, how they affect the people who use them, and what responsibilities architects carry towards the communities, environments and future generations they shape. At Birmingham City University the BA Architecture programme frames architecture as a radical act of care, aiming to develop designers who are ready to challenge established practice and redefine what architecture can be. The programme includes a foundation year, which builds your creative, technical and academic foundations before the main degree begins, and the full course runs over four years full time. You will explore architecture as a discipline that choreographs the spaces of everyday life, developing both the design skills and the critical thinking needed to become a thoughtful, rigorous and socially engaged practitioner. The BA Architecture is typically the first stage in a longer professional education that leads, through further postgraduate study and professional experience, to full RIBA chartered architect status. Graduates of the BA may proceed to a postgraduate architecture qualification and then to the professional practice examination. Others work in related roles in planning, urban design, building surveying, interior architecture, set design and the wider built environment professions. The creative thinking, technical drawing and project management skills architecture develops are also valued in a range of design-adjacent careers.
