About this course

Art history and French is a combination that reflects a natural intellectual affinity. France has been at the centre of Western art since at least the seventeenth century, from the classicism of Poussin and the formalism of the Academie to the Impressionist revolution, the Surrealist movement and the dominance of Paris as the global capital of the art world in the twentieth century. French language opens direct access to that tradition and to the critical writing, curatorial practice and museum culture that has shaped how we think about visual art more broadly. Studying both disciplines together gives you a richer engagement with each than either could provide alone. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is central to the French component and gives you sustained immersion in a French-speaking environment. You will develop the capacity to analyse the history, context, style and meaning of images and objects, building visual literacy and engaging with different critical and theoretical frameworks including questions of aesthetics, politics, power and identity. In the French component, you will develop high-level language proficiency alongside an engagement with the literature, culture and history of the French-speaking world. The combination trains you to think across disciplines and to engage with visual and literary culture from a genuinely cross-cultural perspective. Graduates from art history and French programmes pursue careers in museums, galleries, auction houses, cultural institutions, arts journalism, publishing, education, the diplomatic service and international cultural organisations. The visual literacy, research skills and French language competence developed through the programme are particularly valued in contexts that require engagement with French cultural institutions and the broader Francophone cultural world. Postgraduate study in art history, French studies, curating or cultural management is a natural next step.
