About this course

Artificial intelligence and computer science together represent the most dynamic frontier of contemporary technology. Computer science provides the foundational knowledge of computation, algorithms, data structures, and software systems on which all applied technology rests, while artificial intelligence extends those foundations into the design of systems that can reason, learn from data, perceive the world, and make decisions under uncertainty. Understanding both in depth prepares you to build intelligent systems rather than simply use them, and to engage critically with the implications of deploying those systems across society. At Teesside University this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which gives you the mathematical, computational, and study skills needed to succeed in the degree proper, making the course accessible to students who have strong aptitude but may not have the most conventional A-level background. Throughout the programme you will study the fundamental concepts of problem-solving, algorithms, and data structures, learning to think computationally and to design efficient solutions to complex problems. The AI strand introduces machine learning, neural networks, natural language processing, and computer vision, while the computer science component covers programming, software engineering, databases, and systems architecture. A sandwich year and work placement are included, giving you a sustained period of professional experience in industry before you complete your degree, and allowing you to apply your learning in a real workplace environment. Graduates are well prepared for careers across the technology sector and beyond, in roles such as machine learning engineer, data scientist, software developer, AI researcher, systems architect, and technology consultant. Organisations in every sector, from healthcare and finance to retail and government, are recruiting people who can design, evaluate, and deploy AI systems responsibly. Postgraduate study in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, or robotics provides a natural progression for those who wish to specialise or pursue research careers.
