BSc Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
About this course
Artificial intelligence in healthcare is a discipline at the frontier of two of the most consequential fields in modern society, bringing the computational methods of machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing to bear on the challenges of diagnosis, treatment, drug discovery and health system management. AI is already transforming specific areas of healthcare, from the detection of patterns in medical imaging through to the identification of drug candidates and the risk stratification of patient populations, and the opportunities for beneficial application across the wider healthcare system are still being discovered and developed. At the University of Derby this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year available for those who need additional preparation before degree-level study, and a year abroad that provides international exposure in a field that is developing globally. You will study artificial intelligence methods alongside healthcare applications, developing both the computational skills needed to build and deploy AI systems and the domain knowledge needed to apply them responsibly in medical and health service contexts. The programme addresses the technical dimensions of AI alongside the ethical, regulatory and practical challenges of working with health data and clinical systems. Graduates in AI in healthcare work in health technology companies, NHS digital programmes, medical research organisations, pharmaceutical companies, health data analytics and the growing range of companies building AI tools for clinical applications. The combination of computational expertise and healthcare knowledge is rare and increasingly valued as the NHS and healthcare providers worldwide seek to implement AI solutions responsibly and effectively. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in health informatics, clinical AI, bioinformatics or data science, and the pace of development in this field makes it one of the most rapidly evolving career areas in both technology and health.
