MPhys Astrophysics
About this course
Astrophysics is the branch of physics concerned with the nature, origin and evolution of the universe and everything in it: stars, planets, galaxies, black holes, dark matter and the fabric of spacetime itself. It is a discipline that combines the deepest theoretical physics with extraordinary observational challenges, demanding mathematical rigour, computational skill and the physical intuition to reason about phenomena far beyond everyday experience. At the University of St Andrews this five-year full-time integrated masters programme offers a guided exploration of the science of the universe, from our solar system to galaxy clusters, from extrasolar planets to the most extreme objects in the cosmos. You will develop core physics, mathematics and computational skills that allow you to model astrophysical systems and analyse complex observational data sets. The programme includes access to the University Observatory, which houses the largest operational optical telescope in the UK, giving you direct experience of observational astronomy. A year abroad gives you the chance to study at an international partner institution, broadening your exposure to astrophysics research in a global context. The integrated masters format means you graduate with an advanced qualification equivalent to a masters degree, which provides a stronger foundation for doctoral research or highly technical professional roles than a three-year degree alone. Graduates pursue careers in research, data science, technology, software engineering, financial modelling, scientific computing and a range of roles in the space, defence and technology sectors. The advanced mathematical, computational and analytical skills developed on an astrophysics programme are highly transferable, and many graduates move into careers well beyond astronomy itself. Postgraduate research is a common pathway for those who wish to work in academic or applied science.
