Biblical studies and Hebrew is a combination that places you at the intersection of one of the most influential bodies of texts in human history and the living language in which the core of those texts was originally written. The Hebrew Bible, the foundational scriptures of Judaism and a central component of the Christian Old Testament, was written in Classical Hebrew over many centuries, and engaging with it in the original language opens dimensions of meaning and textual complexity that translation cannot fully convey. Alongside the biblical material, you will encounter a wide range of related Jewish and Christian writings including the Dead Sea Scrolls, giving you a richer sense of the diversity of thought and practice in the ancient world. At St Andrews this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, adding international experience to your academic study. Biblical studies at St Andrews provides an opportunity to explore the profound influence that Christian and Jewish scriptures have had on Western civilisation, with studies that focus on the Old and New Testaments while situating them within a wider literary and historical context.
