BSc Bioarchaeology
About this course
Bioarchaeology sits at the fascinating junction of biological science and archaeology, using the physical remains of past populations to reconstruct how people lived, died, and interacted with their environments across long periods of human history. It draws on osteology, genetics, isotope analysis, and ecological science to study skeletal and organic remains, asking questions about diet, disease, migration, population structure, and the relationship between human communities and their landscapes. The discipline has transformed our understanding of the past in ways that written records alone cannot provide. At the University of York, this three-year, full-time programme benefits from the BioArCh centre, a collaborative research facility formed by the Departments of Archaeology, Biology, and Chemistry, and internationally recognised for its concentration of expertise in human palaeoecology and environmental archaeology. You will develop skills in both the biological sciences and archaeological methods, learning to analyse skeletal material, interpret ancient DNA, apply stable isotope data, and situate your findings within broader historical and environmental frameworks. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities, giving you professional and international experience alongside your academic study. York's location in one of England's most archaeologically rich cities, with world-class museum collections nearby, provides an exceptional environment for this kind of learning. Graduates of Bioarchaeology move into careers in archaeology, heritage management, museum curation, and forensic science. Many pursue postgraduate research in bioarchaeology, osteoarchaeology, ancient DNA, or environmental archaeology, contributing to the growing body of knowledge about human prehistory and history. Others find roles in commercial archaeology, environmental consultancy, and cultural resource management. The combination of scientific rigour and humanistic curiosity the degree develops is genuinely distinctive in the graduate market.
