BSc Biological Sciences
About this course
Biological sciences at degree level is the study of life in all its complexity, from the molecular machinery of the cell to the dynamics of ecosystems and the evolutionary processes that have produced the extraordinary diversity of living organisms. It is a discipline that spans genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology, and it provides the scientific foundation for many of the most important advances in medicine, agriculture, environmental management, and biotechnology. Studying biology rigorously means developing both a deep conceptual understanding and the experimental and analytical skills that scientific work requires. At Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London, this three-year full-time degree gives you the opportunity to develop a serious appreciation of biology across its breadth. You will build the core scientific skills required for research and a career in the life sciences, engaging with the fundamental questions of how living systems work at different levels of organisation. Imperial is one of the world's leading research universities, and its biological sciences programme reflects that ambition, placing you in an environment where science is being actively advanced and where the standards expected of students are correspondingly high. Biological sciences graduates go on to work in biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, environmental agencies, clinical sciences, science communication, education, and a wide range of roles in the life sciences industry. Imperial's reputation and networks give graduates a strong platform for competitive careers and postgraduate opportunities. Many go on to doctoral study in biology, genetics, ecology, biochemistry, or related disciplines, pursuing research careers in academia or industry. The combination of scientific rigour and analytical thinking that a biology degree at this level builds is also valued in policy, science journalism, and healthcare management.
