BSc Biological Sciences
About this course
Biological sciences is the study of living organisms in all their variety and complexity, from molecular and cellular processes to populations, ecosystems, and the interactions between species and their environments. It is one of the broadest and most dynamic of all the sciences, encompassing genetics, cell biology, evolution, physiology, ecology, microbiology, and biochemistry, and it is currently advancing at a remarkable pace, driven by developments in genomics, synthetic biology, computational biology, and global responses to disease and ecological change. At University College London, this three-year full-time programme offers high-calibre training in the biological sciences within one of the world's leading research universities. You will develop a thorough grounding in the core areas of the discipline before developing depth in areas that align with your interests, within a department that is actively producing research at the frontiers of biology. UCL's location in London gives students access to major research institutes, medical schools, and the life sciences industry, and the university's strong research culture means undergraduates are taught by scientists who are genuinely advancing knowledge in their fields. You will develop both laboratory skills and the quantitative and analytical abilities needed to work with biological data and interpret current research. Biological sciences graduates pursue careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical science, environmental consultancy, public health, science communication, conservation, teaching, and healthcare. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, whether in a specialist area of biology, in medicine or veterinary science via graduate-entry routes, or in related fields including bioinformatics, ecology, and public health. The breadth of the degree means it serves as an excellent foundation for a wide range of further academic and professional directions.
