BSc Biological Sciences with a Placement Year
About this course
Biological sciences is the scientific study of life in all its forms and at every scale, from the molecules and cells that are the basic units of living systems to the ecosystems that sustain the diversity of species on Earth. It encompasses the origins and early stages of evolution, the complexity of molecular and cellular processes, growth and development, the intricate relationships of ecosystems, and the biology of health and disease. As a discipline it is both intellectually captivating and practically consequential, contributing directly to medicine, agriculture, conservation, and the responses needed to address climate change and food security. At the University of East Anglia this four-year full-time programme, which includes a placement year, takes you from the foundational principles of biology through to advanced and specialist topics, developing both your scientific understanding and the practical skills that research and professional roles in the biological sciences require. The placement year provides a sustained period of professional experience in a relevant environment, whether in research, industry, or applied biology, giving you the kind of direct exposure to professional biological science that makes a significant difference when you graduate. You will develop skills in laboratory techniques, field investigation, data analysis, scientific writing, and the evaluation of biological evidence, as well as the broader problem-solving and analytical capacities that the discipline requires. Graduates move into careers in academic and commercial research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, conservation and environmental management, science communication, public health, and teaching. Many continue to postgraduate study in biological sciences, ecology, molecular biology, or related fields, building towards research or specialist professional careers.
