BSc Biology
About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the ecology of entire ecosystems. It encompasses genetics, cell biology, microbiology, evolution, physiology, ecology, and the chemistry that underlies all biological processes. As a discipline it combines the rigour of experimental science with the wonder of encountering the extraordinary complexity and diversity of living systems. Biology is also increasingly central to the most urgent challenges humanity faces, from pandemic preparedness and antibiotic resistance to climate change, food security, and the development of new medicines. At Bangor University, this programme offers an unusually comprehensive range of structural features. It includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need additional preparation before tackling the main degree. It offers a sandwich year in industry and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience and to study at a partner institution in another country. Work placement is built into the programme, ensuring you develop practical skills in a professional context before you graduate. Bangor has a particularly strong tradition in marine and environmental biology, and its location in North Wales, close to Snowdonia and the Menai Strait, provides exceptional access to natural environments for fieldwork. You will develop skills in laboratory technique, data analysis, field observation, and scientific communication alongside your theoretical understanding of how living systems work at every scale. Biology graduates work in research, healthcare, environmental management, conservation, pharmaceutical and biotech industries, education, science policy, and public health. Many continue to postgraduate study, whether in specialist biological sciences, medicine, or environmental science. The breadth of the discipline means that the career options from a biology degree are genuinely wide.
