MBiol Biology
About this course
Biology is the study of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the ecological networks that sustain entire biomes. It is a discipline that underpins medicine, conservation, agriculture, and biotechnology, and it asks some of the deepest questions we can pose about the living world: how organisms develop, how they respond to their environments, and how the diversity of life has arisen through evolution. At Heriot-Watt University this five-year programme follows the integrated master's model common in Scotland, taking you from the essentials of cellular and molecular biology through to specialist topics at the frontier of the discipline. You will develop skills in laboratory technique, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication, alongside a theoretical understanding of genetics, physiology, ecology, and evolution. The programme includes a year abroad, allowing you to study biology in a different national and institutional context, which can be particularly valuable given how internationally collaborative modern biological research has become. The extended five-year structure gives you the depth to pursue a research career or a professional role requiring specialist expertise. Biology graduates are in demand across a wide range of sectors. Many move into research and development in pharmaceuticals, biotech, or academic science. Others pursue careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, public health, clinical science, science communication, or teaching. The quantitative and analytical skills the degree builds also open doors in data-driven roles in health and life sciences industries. Postgraduate study is a natural next step for those drawn to research, with opportunities in biomedical science, ecology, genetics, and related disciplines.
