BSc Biology with a Year Abroad
About this course
Biology is the science of life, concerned with understanding how living organisms are structured, how they function, how they developed from earlier forms, and how they interact with each other and with their physical environments. It is a discipline of extraordinary breadth, spanning the molecular mechanisms within cells, the physiology of whole organisms, the ecology of populations and communities, and the evolutionary processes that have generated the diversity of life on Earth. Biology is directly relevant to medicine, agriculture, conservation, environmental management, and biotechnology, and is the foundation on which many of the most important applied sciences are built. At the University of Kent, this four-year full-time Biology with a Year Abroad programme is hands-on, research-informed, and globally focused. You will study the complexity and diversity of life, from bacteria and viruses to animals, plants, and entire ecosystems. The course equips you with the analytical, practical, and critical thinking skills needed to understand how living systems work and how they are affected by external forces, including climate change, habitat loss, disease, and human intervention. The year abroad gives you international scientific experience, the opportunity to encounter different research cultures, and a perspective on biological diversity that studying in a single country cannot fully provide. You will develop laboratory and field skills, competence in biological data collection and analysis, and the ability to design experiments, interpret results, and communicate scientific findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Graduates from biology programmes pursue careers in conservation, ecology, pharmaceutical and biomedical research, environmental consultancy, agriculture, science education, and science communication. The year abroad adds an international dimension valued by many employers. Postgraduate study in biology, ecology, conservation, or biomedical science is a natural next step.
