About this course

Biomedical engineering combines engineering principles with biological and medical science to design and develop the technologies, devices and systems that transform healthcare. From prosthetics and implantable devices to diagnostic imaging systems and wearable health monitors, biomedical engineers work on some of the most consequential design challenges imaginable, creating products that directly improve and extend human life. The discipline requires fluency in both the engineering sciences and the biological and physiological sciences that medical applications demand. At the University of Hull this five-year MEng programme includes an industrial placement year, providing a sustained period of professional experience within a medical device company, NHS clinical engineering department or healthcare technology organisation before you complete your final year. You will study the engineering foundations of mechanics, electronics, materials and systems alongside the biological sciences of anatomy, physiology and cell biology, developing the cross-disciplinary knowledge needed to design devices and systems that function reliably within the complex environment of the human body. Hands-on laboratory work and local hospital visits give you direct exposure to the clinical context in which biomedical technologies are used, making the engineering education feel connected to its real purpose throughout. Graduates of the MEng programme are particularly well prepared for senior technical and management roles within the medical device and healthcare technology industries, and the industrial placement typically accelerates entry into professional roles in the sector. Roles in product development, research and development, quality and regulatory affairs, clinical applications and engineering management within NHS hospital engineering are among the destinations. Chartered engineer status, pursued through engineering professional bodies such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology, is a common aspiration, and the MEng provides the academic level required for that pathway. Some graduates go on to doctoral research in areas such as biomechanics, medical imaging or neural engineering.
