About this course

Biomedical engineering applies engineering principles and problem-solving methods to the challenges of medicine and healthcare. It is the discipline responsible for the diagnostic technologies that doctors depend on, from imaging systems and biosensors to implantable devices and prosthetics, as well as the computational tools used to model biological systems and the materials science behind biocompatible implants and tissue engineering. Biomedical engineers need a rigorous grounding in both engineering and biological science, and the ability to apply technical knowledge to the complex, unpredictable, and ethically demanding context of human health. At Bradford this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, giving you a preparatory stage to develop the mathematical, scientific, and engineering foundations you need before you enter the main degree. You will experience a range of teaching and learning environments across the programme, from formal lectures and tutorials through to laboratory work and open-ended design and problem-solving projects, often tackled in small groups. This reflects both the collaborative nature of biomedical engineering practice and the importance of developing both technical depth and the practical, interpersonal skills that professional engineers use every day. The programme is designed to develop the full range of capabilities that biomedical engineering careers require, from the conceptual and analytical to the practical and communicative. Graduates move into careers in medical device design and manufacturing, clinical engineering, research and development in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, NHS clinical engineering departments, regulatory affairs, and academic research. Many go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research in biomedical engineering or related fields, and some work towards professional engineering accreditation. The discipline is growing rapidly, driven by ageing populations and the increasing sophistication of medical technology.
