BSc Biomedical Science (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Biomedical science is the discipline that underpins modern healthcare, using the techniques of biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and clinical laboratory science to understand disease and to support its diagnosis and treatment. Biomedical scientists work behind the scenes in hospital laboratories and research environments, performing the analyses that guide clinical decisions and advancing the knowledge on which new treatments are built. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Suffolk includes a foundation year that provides you with the subject knowledge, study skills, and personal confidence required to successfully progress towards the BSc (Hons) degree. The foundation year is a structured entry point that introduces the core sciences underlying biomedical study before you progress into the main degree. As you advance through the programme you will develop expertise in clinical biochemistry, haematology, medical microbiology, immunology, histopathology, and the regulatory frameworks that govern laboratory practice. Practical laboratory work is central throughout, developing the precision, attention to detail, and technical competence that are essential in a clinical environment. The programme is designed to prepare you for the professional landscape of biomedical science, including routes towards registration as a healthcare scientist. Biomedical science graduates work in NHS hospital laboratories, private healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, public health agencies, and research institutions. The Healthcare Scientist registration route, via the Academy for Healthcare Science, is available to graduates who complete the appropriate portfolio of practice. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas such as clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, immunology, or biomedical research, and the strong laboratory foundation you develop opens doors in a range of science-based industries beyond healthcare.
