BSc Biomedical Sciences
About this course
Biomedical sciences is the research-facing side of medicine, concerned with understanding the biological processes that underlie health and disease, and with developing the knowledge that makes new treatments and diagnostics possible. The field spans cell and molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, and pathology, and it is driven by the ambition to improve human health through scientific discovery. A degree in biomedical sciences prepares you to contribute to that endeavour, either directly through a research or laboratory career or through the many other roles in healthcare and the life sciences sector that require this foundation. At the University of York, this three-year full-time programme gives you a rigorous scientific education with a strong emphasis on the research skills that will allow you to contribute to one of the most significant challenges of the twenty-first century. A sandwich year and year abroad are available, as are work placement opportunities, allowing you to gain experience in research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, healthcare organisations, or international academic settings during your studies. You will study the biological systems and mechanisms that govern health and disease, develop laboratory and analytical skills, and engage with the scientific literature that shapes current understanding. York's research strengths in the biological and biomedical sciences mean you will encounter cutting-edge thinking throughout the programme. Graduates go on to work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical laboratories, research institutions, healthcare organisations, and public health agencies. Many pursue postgraduate study in biomedical science, medical research, public health, or clinical medicine, and the degree is a strong foundation for graduate entry to medicine or dentistry. Careers in science communication, regulatory affairs, and the medical devices sector are also accessible to graduates with a strong biomedical science background.
