MSci Biomedicine with Advanced Pathways
About this course
Biomedicine investigates the biological mechanisms of disease at the cellular, molecular, and systems level, building the scientific understanding that underpins modern medicine and that drives the development of new diagnostics, therapies, and preventive strategies. It draws on cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, pharmacology, and pathology to examine how the body functions, how disease disrupts those functions, and how scientific knowledge can be translated into clinical benefit. The discipline sits at the meeting point of basic science and medical practice. At Birkbeck, this integrated MSci programme combines three years of BSc-level biomedicine study with a fourth year of Master's-level specialisation in your chosen area of focus. The extended structure is designed to provide you with advanced knowledge, skills, and hands-on research experience, giving you a platform from which to launch a career in research science that a three-year degree alone cannot provide. You will study the biological foundations of human health and disease in depth, developing both experimental competence and the critical scientific reasoning that graduate employment in the life sciences demands. Birkbeck's evening teaching model means the programme is studied part-time. Graduates of biomedicine programmes with integrated master's qualifications are well placed for careers in academic and industrial research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, clinical research and trials management, regulatory affairs, and science policy. The additional year of Master's-level study significantly enhances your research credibility and opens doors to doctoral programmes and specialist roles that a BSc alone would not. Postgraduate study in molecular medicine, drug discovery, genetics, or related disciplines is also a natural route for those who want to develop further specialisation.
