BA Business and Management
About this course
Business and management is the study of how organisations work and how they can be led, operated, and developed effectively. At its best, the discipline combines analytical rigour with practical wisdom, helping you understand the financial, strategic, operational, and human dimensions of organisational life and develop the capacity to make sound decisions in complex, fast-changing environments. The modern business landscape is genuinely global, and organisations of every kind face the challenge of adapting to competitive pressures, technological change, and shifting social expectations. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year full-time programme is built around the recognition that employers need graduates who can integrate theory with real-world experience and who bring the practical skills that today's business managers actually use. You will cover the core disciplines of business education: strategy, marketing, human resource management, finance and accounting, operations, entrepreneurship, and organisational behaviour, developing a rounded understanding of how each of these functions interacts and how effective leaders and managers think across all of them. The curriculum engages seriously with the global business environment, examining how organisations enter and operate in international markets, how cultural and institutional differences affect management practice, and what the changing nature of work and technology means for how businesses are run. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing an exceptional breadth of practical and international experience within a three-year degree. The sandwich year gives you extended professional experience in a business setting, the year abroad develops your international perspective and adaptability, and the placement provides further direct exposure to professional contexts. Together, these elements substantially strengthen both your employability and your practical understanding of how organisations function. Business and management graduates work across virtually every sector of the economy, in roles spanning management, consultancy, marketing, finance, operations, human resources, and entrepreneurship. The generalist nature of the degree is also a strength: it equips you to move between sectors and to progress into senior management roles over the course of a career. Further study at postgraduate level, including the MBA for those who have gained professional experience, is a well-established route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or accelerate into leadership.
