BSc Business and Sociology
About this course
Combining business with sociology creates a degree that is analytically unusual and professionally valuable. Business education equips you with the frameworks and skills needed to understand organisations, markets, strategy, and finance, while sociology provides the critical tools to examine how society, power, inequality, and culture shape the very conditions in which businesses operate. Together they produce graduates who can see both the commercial and the social dimensions of organisational life, a combination increasingly sought after in a world where businesses face growing scrutiny for their social and environmental impact. At Aston University, this four-year full-time programme takes you through core business disciplines including management, marketing, economics, and organisational behaviour, while giving you genuine depth in sociological theory, research methods, and the study of contemporary social issues. You will explore how organisations are embedded in social structures, how inequality and identity shape workplace dynamics, and how markets and institutions interact with broader forces of culture and political economy. A year abroad is part of the programme, broadening your international perspective and giving you experience of studying or working in a different national context, which is particularly valuable for understanding how business and society intersect differently around the world. Graduates from this combination go on to careers in management, consulting, human resources, marketing, policy, and the public and voluntary sectors. The sociological dimension is particularly valued in roles concerned with diversity and inclusion, corporate responsibility, social enterprise, and public affairs. Many also continue to postgraduate study in business, social science, or related professional fields.
