BA Business Economics (with Placement Year)
About this course
Business economics brings together the analytical tools of economics and the practical orientation of business studies to produce graduates who can apply economic thinking to real-world organisational challenges. Where economics on its own tends toward abstraction and theory, business economics keeps one foot firmly in the world of firms, markets, strategy, and management, asking how economic analysis can inform better decisions about pricing, investment, competition, labour, and resource allocation. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of Hull includes a placement year, giving you the opportunity to work within a business or economic context and to apply the concepts and analytical methods you have studied in a genuine professional environment. You will develop skills in economic analysis, quantitative methods, financial reasoning, strategic thinking, and communication, building the ability to construct well-reasoned arguments and present them clearly to a range of audiences. The placement year is an integral part of the degree rather than an optional addition, ensuring that all graduates leave with practical experience alongside their academic qualifications. Graduates of business economics are well prepared for careers in business analysis, management consultancy, financial services, economic research, marketing and strategy, and the public sector. The combination of economic method and business awareness is valued wherever organisations need people who can analyse complex situations, evaluate options, and make the case for a course of action with evidence. Many graduates also pursue professional qualifications in accountancy, finance, or management alongside or after their degree. Further study in economics, business, or public policy is a natural extension for those who wish to develop expertise in a particular area.
