MA(SocSci) Business Economics/Mathematics
About this course
Business economics applies economic thinking to the decisions firms and markets actually face. Where economics in the abstract asks broad questions about how resources are allocated across an entire economy, business economics focuses those questions on the corporation and its environment: how organisations respond to competitive pressures, how they price goods and services, how they manage costs and risk, and how the macroeconomic and regulatory context shapes their choices. Combining this with mathematics gives you the quantitative tools to model these questions rigorously and to analyse data with precision. At the University of Glasgow this four-year full-time programme places you at the intersection of economic theory, real-world business practice and mathematical analysis. You will develop a sound understanding of the resource allocation issues facing firms and the economic environments in which they operate, drawing on both theoretical frameworks and real-world case studies. The mathematics strand equips you with analytical tools, including calculus, statistics, linear algebra and mathematical modelling, that are indispensable for serious economic analysis. The programme offers a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in an international environment and broaden your perspective on how economic forces vary across different markets and institutional contexts. Glasgow's faculty are engaged with leading-edge economic research, and you will encounter contemporary debates in economics and business strategy alongside established theory. Graduates with this combination of economic understanding and mathematical skill are in strong demand. They typically move into roles in economic analysis, financial services, management consulting, central banking, corporate strategy, government economics and data science. Many pursue postgraduate study in economics, finance, business analytics or quantitative social science, and the rigorous mathematical training makes a wide range of further academic pathways available.
