BSc Business Management
About this course
Business management is the study of how organisations are run, and it is a degree that takes seriously both the theory behind effective management and the practical skills needed to put that theory into action. It covers the full range of management disciplines, from strategy, marketing, and operations to finance, human resources, and organisational behaviour, giving you a broad understanding of how businesses function and how they can be led more effectively. At Southampton Solent University, this three-year full-time degree includes both a foundation year and a sandwich year with work placement opportunities, giving you additional preparation at the start and extended professional experience in the middle. The degree is designed to develop the skills, confidence, and real-world experience you need to succeed in business or to excel as an entrepreneur. You will study the principles of business strategy and decision-making, learning to analyse markets, manage resources, lead teams, and communicate with a range of stakeholders. The practical orientation of the programme means that your academic learning is consistently connected to real business contexts, and the sandwich year allows you to put your skills to work in a genuine professional environment before you graduate. You will develop strong commercial awareness, communication and leadership skills, the ability to work analytically with financial and market data, and the confidence to manage projects and people effectively. These capabilities are in demand across virtually every sector of the economy. Graduates from business management degrees go on to careers across a huge range of organisations, including management roles in commercial businesses, the public sector, and not-for-profit organisations. Entrepreneurship, management consultancy, marketing, operations, human resources, and finance are all well-represented career paths. Many graduates also pursue professional qualifications or postgraduate study in business, finance, or management to develop specialist expertise or to accelerate their progress to more senior roles.
