BA Business Studies and English Studies
About this course
Business studies and English studies is a combination that brings together two disciplines that develop complementary but distinct kinds of capability. Business studies provides the analytical frameworks and practical knowledge to understand how organisations function, compete and create value, covering strategy, marketing, finance, management and the wider economic environment. English studies develops the ability to read critically, interpret complex texts, construct sustained arguments and communicate clearly and compellingly. In combination, the two disciplines produce graduates who are commercially aware and intellectually flexible, which is a powerful combination in the modern professional world. At the University of Stirling, this four-year programme gives you a thorough grounding in both disciplines, developing your business knowledge alongside your literary and critical skills. You will study core areas of business including strategy, organisational behaviour, marketing and finance, while also engaging with literature across a range of periods and traditions, building your analytical and expressive abilities. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and broaden your perspective on both subjects. Graduates who combine business studies and English are well equipped for a wide range of careers. The business knowledge opens pathways in management, marketing, consulting, finance and entrepreneurship, while the English dimension adds particular value in roles that require communication, persuasion and the ability to engage with complex material. Common destinations include marketing communications, public relations, publishing, management, the civil service, journalism, education and a wide range of commercial roles. Postgraduate study in business administration, English, marketing or communications is available for those who want to deepen their expertise or specialise further.
