MA Celtic Civilisation/Classics
About this course
Celtic civilisation and classics is a pairing that spans two of the ancient world's most enduring and influential cultural traditions. Classics encompasses the languages, literatures, philosophies, histories, and material cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, civilisations whose ideas about politics, ethics, aesthetics, and knowledge shaped the intellectual foundations of Europe and beyond. Celtic civilisation immerses you in the history of the Celtic peoples, the development of their societies, their literature, material culture, art, and religion, from earliest times on the European continent to the present-day British Isles. At the University of Glasgow, you will engage with both traditions in genuine depth, developing the linguistic, historical, and cultural tools needed to investigate them with scholarly rigour. The Celtic civilisation strand introduces you to the languages, archaeology, and textual traditions of the Celtic world, from Gaulish inscriptions and Irish medieval poetry to the living cultural traditions of Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. The classics strand develops your engagement with Greek and Roman antiquity through language, literature, philosophy, and material evidence. The year abroad element extends the degree to four years and gives you the opportunity to study at an institution with complementary expertise, broadening your perspective and deepening your scholarly engagement. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points, and the programme is studied full time. Graduates from this combination go on to careers in academia, heritage, museums, archiving, education, journalism, and cultural organisations. Further study at postgraduate level in Celtic studies, classical studies, ancient history, or medieval studies is a natural route for those pursuing scholarly careers.
