MA Celtic Civilisation/Geography
About this course
Celtic civilisation and geography might seem an unexpected combination, but both are disciplines that care deeply about place, people, and the relationship between human societies and their physical environments. Celtic civilisation immerses you in the history, literature, art, religion, and material culture of the Celtic peoples, from their earliest presence on the European continent through the development of Gaelic and Brittonic cultures to the contemporary languages and communities of the British Isles and beyond. Geography examines the physical and human processes that shape landscapes, environments, and the spatial organisation of society. At Glasgow you will study Celtic languages, literature, and history alongside the range of topics that modern geography encompasses, including physical geography, human geography, urban studies, environmental change, and geographic information systems. Celtic civilisation asks you to engage with languages and texts, with archaeological and historical evidence, and with the survival and transformation of cultural traditions over very long timescales. Geography develops your skills in spatial analysis, fieldwork, data interpretation, and environmental thinking. Together, the two subjects cultivate an unusually rich understanding of the landscapes and cultures of the British Isles and of the broader patterns of human settlement and environmental change. The programme is offered part-time and includes a year abroad, giving you time to engage with Celtic culture or geographic study in a different national context. Graduates pursue careers in heritage management, museums, environmental organisations, urban and rural planning, education, research, and government agencies concerned with land, culture, and environment. Postgraduate study in Celtic studies, geography, environmental management, or related fields is a natural continuation.
