MA Celtic Civilisation/italian
About this course
Celtic civilisation and Italian is a combination that might seem unexpected, but there is a deep logic to it: Celtic culture, rooted in the north and west of Europe, and Italian culture, anchored in the Mediterranean world from which so much of European thought and art derives, are two of the most distinctive and generative cultural traditions on the continent, and placing them in dialogue opens a rich comparative perspective on European history, language, and identity. Celtic civilisation immerses you in the history, literature, material culture, art, and religion of the Celts from their origins on the European continent through to the modern British Isles. Italian opens access to one of the world's great literary and cultural traditions, from Dante to the Renaissance to contemporary Italian society. At the University of Glasgow this five-year full-time programme allows you to develop both subjects with genuine depth, engaging with Celtic languages and texts at whatever level suits your background alongside Italian language study to a high level of proficiency. You will study the development of Celtic societies across time alongside Italian literature, culture, history, politics, and film, developing the cultural breadth and analytical skills that both disciplines demand. A sandwich year with a work placement is incorporated into the degree, providing professional experience alongside your academic development. Graduates from this combination pursue careers in education, heritage, cultural organisations, publishing, journalism, translation, and the arts, drawing on whichever strand of the degree is most relevant to their professional path. The Italian specialism is particularly valuable in international business, cultural diplomacy, and any role involving engagement with Italy or Italian-speaking communities. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in Celtic studies, Italian studies, or medieval and early modern European culture, where the breadth of this unusual combination is a distinctive research strength.
