About this course

Celtic studies and mathematics brings together two disciplines that might appear distant but that in combination develop an unusually rich intellectual range. Celtic studies provides the opportunity to combine language study with courses on the medieval and modern Celtic cultures of the British Isles, engaging with the Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton traditions that have shaped the cultural identities of the Atlantic fringes of Europe. Mathematics incorporates the exploration of numerical, geometrical, and logical relationships with rigour and depth, developing quantitative and analytical skills that are valued across a wide range of careers. At Glasgow, you will study Celtic language and culture alongside a rigorous mathematical curriculum, developing expertise in both humanistic enquiry and quantitative analysis. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a Celtic-speaking community or at a partner institution where Celtic studies is pursued, or to develop your mathematical expertise in a different academic environment. The degree runs over four years full-time and leads to an MA (Hons), with a typical entry tariff of 216 points. Graduates of Celtic studies and mathematics programmes are distinctive in the graduate market, combining cultural and linguistic rarity with strong quantitative skills. Celtic language expertise is valued in broadcasting, education, the public sector in Wales and Scotland, cultural heritage, and translation. The mathematical training opens pathways in data science, finance, computing, and research. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in Celtic languages, mathematics, or related fields, and some build careers that draw on both dimensions of their degree.
