MA Central & East European Studies/Italian
About this course
Central and East European studies and Italian together form a combination that spans two of the most significant cultural and political regions in Europe. Central and Eastern Europe, encompassing countries from Poland and the Czech Republic to Hungary, Romania, and the post-Soviet states, has a history of extraordinary complexity, shaped by the Ottoman and Habsburg empires, the Second World War, communist rule, and the dramatic transformations of 1989 and after. Italian, meanwhile, is one of Europe's major languages, opening up a culture with an unparalleled contribution to art, architecture, music, literature, and political thought, and a country that has been central to European history from the Roman Empire to the modern EU. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time degree develops your expertise in both strands over an extended programme that gives you the time to reach a high level in the Italian language while also developing the historical and cultural knowledge of Central and Eastern Europe that the area studies component provides. A sandwich year and a work placement are incorporated into the degree, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience alongside your academic study and to spend time in the relevant regions. Glasgow has strong modern languages provision and a serious commitment to area studies, and the combination of language learning with historical and cultural depth makes this an unusually rich preparation for international careers. Graduates from Central and East European Studies with Italian go on to careers in diplomacy, international relations, journalism, the EU institutions, international business, translation and interpreting, cultural organisations, and NGOs. The specific language and cultural knowledge of Central and Eastern Europe combined with Italian fluency is a genuinely distinctive combination that opens doors in international settings. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in European studies, languages, history, or international relations. The typical entry tariff is 200 points.
