MChem Chemistry with Data Science
About this course
Chemistry with data science is a forward-looking combination that connects the central science with the computational and analytical tools that are reshaping how chemistry is done. Data science brings techniques from statistics, machine learning, and programming to bear on the vast datasets that modern chemistry generates, from high-throughput experimental screening and spectroscopic analysis to molecular dynamics simulations and materials databases. Chemists who can work with these tools, designing experiments, analysing results, and building predictive models, are at the frontier of where the discipline is heading. At Strathclyde this five-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in both disciplines. You will study the major branches of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, alongside substantial training in data science, machine learning, and computational methods. The combination is designed for students who want to work at the interface of experimental chemistry and digital technology, and who recognise that the future of chemical discovery is increasingly shaped by computational approaches. A sandwich year provides professional experience in a chemistry, data science, or pharmaceutical setting, and a year abroad is available, along with work placement experience embedded throughout the programme. Strathclyde has a strong tradition in chemistry with industrial relevance, and the programme reflects the university's connections with the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors in Scotland and beyond. Graduates move into careers in pharmaceutical research and development, chemical data analytics, materials science, biotechnology, scientific software development, and academic research. The combination of chemistry and data science skills is increasingly sought after by employers in industries that depend on rapid analysis of large experimental or molecular datasets. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study or doctoral research in chemistry, cheminformatics, or computational science.
